Burdwan Municipal High School had its auspicious inception in the year 1883. Since then began its splendid journey along the avenue of education. 95 km from Kolkata on the north bank of the river Damodar, is the district
headquarters. Reference to Bardhaman is found in the Jain scriptures.
During the Mughal rule it was known as Sharifabad.
Burdwan, well connected by rail and road to the rest of the country,
has a glorious place on the educational map of the state. Burdwan is
the address of a university ,one medical college , three general degree
colleges, one engineering institute, one polytechnic, ITI, some professional
degree institutes ,one nursing college and a large number of schools.
